The Anti-Feminist Agenda...

Bless Gail Collins.  Her twice-weekly column for the NYT is always well-informed and amusing reading, and when she is angry, there is no one better.  This Saturday she was outraged and angry, and so should we all be.  The title of her piece says it all, “The Siege of Planned Parenthood.”  How dare Congress!
As Collins wrote: [Here]
Last month, they voted to repeal the health care law. This month, they’re going after an organization that provides millions of women with both family-planning services and basic health medical care, like pap smears and screening for diabetes, breast cancer, cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.
Our legislative slogan for 2011: Let Them Use Leeches.
Collins also described a number of video-taped “stings” that a pro-life group, Live Action, ran against 12 Planned Parenthood offices in 6 different states in the last few weeks.  Live Action is a group headed by Lila Rose, a fellow sting “artist” ally of conservative operative James O’Keefe.  Do you remember the fuss he made against ACORN with lying interviews that so discredited the organization that they have disbanded?  He then allegedly tried tapping the office phone of Senator Mary Landrieu (D,LA).
In Live Action’s bogus interviews, a hired actor asked to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases that he said he was afraid he had contracted from his “girls.”  He suggested that some were underaged.  He asked the prices for the various services.  He was given accurate, legal information, including the necessity of providing photo I.D.  In all cases the information provided the pimp was accurate and the authorities were notified.  In one case the interviewer was fired, but in all others, strict legal and professional procedure was followed.
Let me also add that the final video released to the media was “doctored.”  [Here]  Of course, this will be overlooked by the pro-life folks who only yearn to have confirmation of their worst nightmares to stoke the fires of their hatred and bigotry.
Collins ended her column noting that down in Texas,  pro-life Gov. Rick Perry, while facing a massive budget which has necessitated cutting essential services and money to schools, has pushed legislation which would require that all women who plan to have an abortion must first undergo a sonogram.
It was good that Gail Collins reminded us that there is currently a nationwide attack against legal abortions by the rightwing.  We need reminding.  The assault is well-funded, well-organized and relentless.  We hear little noise from the moneyed elite.  After all, even before Roe v. Wade, abortion services were available to the very rich, if they wished it.  All they had to do was hop on a plane and go to a country where the procedure was legal.  The burden, now as always, falls on the poor who do not have such options.
When are the young going to rise up and march, as we did for them years ago?
Margaret Sanger!  We need you!...
